We have now completed our month-long 1,400 km canoe and raft journey down the mighty Fraser River from the Rocky Mountains to Vancouver. The focus of our expedition has been on healing and protecting this river, which is the world's largest salmon producing river. Each one of the participants is creating projects to advance the protection of this lifeblood river of BC. The Fraser Watershed drains about a quarter of the province. We traveled through several distinct ecosystems, from the moist mountainous headwaters to the dry canyon lands to the huge floodplain. There are many threats facing the Fraser Watershed, including industrial development, agriculture, climate change, pollution, and natural disasters like the massive rock slide near Big Bar. While these threats can seem overwhelming, they can be tackled — and many people are committed to the solutions. Our month-long journey was also full of challenges but we worked together to make it through. Likewise, it's possible for society to pull together to heal and protect our living planet. The past month has been an incredible adventure which I'll never forget. I'm grateful to have shared this journey with a dozen amazing people.
